How to use Canva for designing a social media graphic

Set up Canva

  1. Open canva.com and create a free account
  2. On the home screen choose Create a design and pick a type such as Instagram Post or Presentation
  3. Browse the template gallery and open one in the editor
  4. Check the plan badge on stock items, since premium elements need Pro or Business

Example: designing a social media graphic

  1. Search the template gallery for your topic and click a template
  2. Replace the placeholder text and swap photos from the Elements or Uploads panel
  3. Apply your brand colors and fonts to the page
  4. Use Resize or duplicate pages to adapt it to other formats

Review and export the result

  1. Preview the design in presentation or full-screen view
  2. Open Share, then Download, and confirm the file type (and CMYK PDF if printing, which needs a paid plan)
  3. Confirm no premium-only element is left unlicensed on the Free plan
