What we checked, and when

Every number on this site has a source and a date. These counters are computed from the catalog itself, not typed in.

How a tool gets on the site

STEP 1SourceOfficial pricing page, docs, help center, policy pages. Nothing from third-party blogs.
STEP 2VerifyUSD prices with plan names, platforms only as stated, free tier confirmed or marked "not published".
STEP 3PublishPages that pass the depth check go live with a status badge; thin or blocked ones stay drafts.
STEP 4Re-checkPrices every 7 days, other sources every 30. A change flags the page for an editor; it never edits content on its own.

The full methodology

AI Tool Atlas helps you find an AI tool for a specific job, understand what it can and cannot do, and compare alternatives. This page explains where our information comes from and what each label and rating means.

Review statuses

  • Documented overview — the page is built only from the vendor’s official pages (homepage, pricing, docs, policies), checked on the date shown under “Last checked”. We did not run the product ourselves, so there is no editorial score and the page never says “we tested”. Every unverified point is listed under “Not verified” in the Sources section.
  • Hands-on tested — an editor used the tool on a named plan with a written test plan, recorded inputs and outputs, and the page carries a test-results section and an editorial score. The title of such a page says “Review”.
  • Listed (older pages) — facts checked against the official site; the shorter page layout without plan cards and FAQ. These pages are being upgraded to documented overviews.
  • Needs verification — new listing or facts (often pricing) could not be confirmed from official sources yet.
  • Needs update — one of the official sources changed after our last check (we re-check prices about every 7 days and policies about every 30). An editor is re-verifying; the text is never rewritten automatically.
  • Discontinued — the vendor has shut the product down; the page stays for reference and can be hidden with the catalog filter.

Editorial score

The editorial score runs from 1 to 5 and is only published after a real hands-on test. Each score shows the test date, the plan we used and a short summary of the method and results. If we have not tested a tool, we show “Not yet reviewed” instead of a number. We do not turn vendor marketing into a review.

User reviews

Anyone can leave a 1–5 star review. Every review is checked by a moderator before it appears. The user rating is the average of approved reviews only — pending, spam and deleted reviews never count. If a tool has no approved reviews, we say so. We never publish made-up reviews.

Pricing and dates

AI pricing changes often. Pricing summaries show the date we last checked them and link to the official pricing page, which is always the final word. When we could not confirm prices, we write “See official pricing”. “Last verified” is the date facts were checked against official sources; “Discovered” is the date the tool entered our catalog.

Some listings may be sponsored. They carry a visible “Sponsored” label. Sponsorship never changes an editorial score, a user rating or the order of search results.

Corrections

Spotted something outdated? Use the submission form and describe the correction. We re-check the official source before changing a listing.

Frequently asked questions

Do vendors pay to be listed or ranked?

No. There are no paid placements, affiliate rankings or sponsored scores. Category picks are ordered by verified pricing, hands-on status and documentation depth.

Where do the prices come from?

From the vendor's official US pricing page, copied with the plan name and the date we read it. Prices in other currencies are not converted; we show "not published" instead of guessing.

What does "Needs verification" mean?

A fact we could not confirm from official sources yet, often because the vendor's site blocks automated reading. The page says so and links to the vendor.

How often is a page re-checked?

Prices and policy pages are re-read about every 7 days, the rest every 30 days. When a source changes, an editor reviews the page before anything is updated.

What is the difference between Documented and Hands-on tested?

Documented pages are built only from official sources. Hands-on tested pages add a recorded test by an editor on a named plan, with inputs, outputs and a dated score.
