Is Claude better than ChatGPT? The short answer

Pick Claude if you work with long documents, want writing and coding help in one assistant, or need a pay-per-token API for the same models. Pick ChatGPT if you need image generation, voice with video, deep research reports or a broader set of built-in tools. Claude and ChatGPT both start at $20/mo for the first paid individual plan, and neither includes API access in a chat subscription. Check usage limits on Claude and ChatGPT, because each vendor states that caps apply and can change.

When the usual advice is wrong

"ChatGPT has unlimited messages"
Only everyday text chats are unlimited. Uploads, image creation, deep research and Codex have plan-dependent caps.
"The $20 plan includes the API"
Neither Claude Pro nor ChatGPT Plus includes API access. Both bill API use separately per token.
"Claude is better for writing, so writers should pick Claude"
Not if every piece also needs an image. Claude has no native image generation, so you would pay for a second tool.
"Both train on your chats, so privacy is equal"
The difference is in team plans: Claude Team and Enterprise and ChatGPT Business both exclude your content from training by default, while consumer plans on both rely on an opt-out you have to set.
