SkeletIQ: Pricing, Features & Best Use Cases

Beta tool that generates, critiques and cost-estimates software architectures and hands them to coding agents as specs over MCP.

Who should use SkeletIQ

SkeletIQ fits engineers who want a costed, critiqued system architecture generated from a prompt and then handed to Claude Code or another MCP host as an AGENTS.md brief with a build order and drift check. Based on the vendor's documentation, not on a hands-on test.

Best for: Software architects

Also a good fit for

  • Engineers using AI coding agents
  • Startup technical founders

Consider another tool if product is in beta

Or if

  • Free plan limited to 100 credits/month (about 5 generations) and 3 projects
  • Free exports are watermarked PNG only

What is SkeletIQ, and how does it work?

SkeletIQ turns a plain-English system description into an architecture of services, connections and infrastructure, shown on an editable canvas with C4 and Mermaid diagrams and cost estimates against AWS, GCP and Azure pricing. It runs rule-based critique (single points of failure, missing caching, compliance gaps) and exports the design as a brief that coding agents such as Claude Code can consume over MCP. The product is in beta and supports bring-your-own-key and local models.

Where SkeletIQ is most useful

Scenarios are worked out by our editors from the documentation; the actual result depends on your input and plan.

Drafting a system architecture from a text prompt

Who
Startup technical founders and architects
You provide
Description such as a chat API handling 100k concurrent users
Expected result
Generated services, connections and data flows with written-down assumptions
Plan needed
Free (about 5 generations)
Limitation
Each generation spends credits and takes minutes source (opens in a new tab)

Estimating cloud cost of a proposed design

Who
Engineers sizing infrastructure
You provide
Components placed on the canvas
Expected result
Running monthly estimate per node priced against AWS, GCP or Azure
Plan needed
Free
Limitation
Estimates, not quotes source (opens in a new tab)

Reviewing a design for single points of failure

Who
Reviewers and tech leads
You provide
A design graph, including one drafted by your agent
Expected result
Findings on SPOFs, missing caches, deep sync chains and compliance gaps
Plan needed
All; critique over MCP is free of credits

Key features and their practical limits

AI architecture generation from natural language

Turns a plain-English prompt into services, connections, data flows and infrastructure, using 43 architecture patterns and listing the assumptions it made. Fast first draft of a design.

Access: Credits; BYOK ~15 credits on FreeLimit: Generation takes minutes and uses credits source (opens in a new tab)

Drag-and-drop canvas with per-component cost estimates

Each component maps to real cloud pricing, so moving or adding a node updates the monthly total in real time. Shows cost impact of each decision.

Access: All plansLimit: Pricing source freshness not stated source (opens in a new tab)

Rule-based architecture critique

Computes fan-out, blast radius and sync depth over the design graph and flags SPOFs, missing caches and compliance gaps against 5 frameworks. Findings can be recomputed and checked.

Access: All plansLimit: Advisor one-click fixes capped at 2 per project on Free source (opens in a new tab)

MCP handoff to coding agents

After you release a version, the agent calls get_design to write a brief into AGENTS.md, follows a deterministic build order, and calls check_drift to report what is built, missing or changed. Agent builds against a spec, not a screenshot.

Access: All plans; token minted in Settings, Agent accessLimit: Agent cannot answer open questions or write back to the design source (opens in a new tab)

How to use SkeletIQ for designing a system and handing it to Claude Code

Set up SkeletIQ

  1. Sign up at skeletiq.com with email, Google or GitHub (no card needed).
  2. Mint a token under Settings, Agent access, ticking Read designs and Run generations as needed.
  3. Connect Claude Code with: claude mcp add skeletiq --env SKELETIQ_API_KEY=your_token -- npx -y @skeletiq/mcp.

Example: designing a system and handing it to Claude Code

  1. Type your system description and run the generation; review the canvas, cost and critique findings.
  2. Answer or assign the open questions, read the readiness report and release the version.
  3. Tell your agent: Use the SkeletIQ project and start building it; it writes the brief into AGENTS.md.

Review and export the result

  1. Run check_drift from the agent to see what is built, missing or not in the design.
  2. Review critique findings such as single points of failure before releasing.
Example prompt suggested by our editors (not a recorded output of the product)
Design a real-time chat API handling 100k concurrent users with message persistence and read receipts.

SkeletIQ integrations and API

Native integrations and export formats

Export: PNG, SVG, JSON, YAML, Markdown, Mermaid, PDF

API access and separate billing

An API is available, billing not documented. MCP server @skeletiq/mcp is MIT-licensed; tokens are revocable and cannot touch billing or provider keys.

Privacy, data use and commercial rights

Summarized from the vendor's current policies; this is not legal advice and a vendor's badge is not an independent audit.

How your inputs and outputs are handled

Prompts and project content are sent to the LLM provider (OpenAI, Anthropic, Ollama, or your BYOK provider) via the model gateway.

Projects, prompts and chats are stored with your account; BYOK keys are stored AES-256-GCM encrypted.

Controls for business users

  • Tokens grant only ticked scopes and are revocable
  • Audit trail of security events
