What Shopify Dev MCP is

@shopify/dev-mcp is Shopify's MCP server for building on the Shopify platform. It lets agents search documentation and API schemas, validate GraphQL operations, Liquid and theme files and UI-extension code, and resolve supported API versions. It runs locally over stdio without authentication.

Permissions and security

What it can access

Security notes from the maintainers

  • Release builds send usage events to https://shopify.dev/mcp/usage, which can include tool inputs and results
  • Opt out with an empty ~/.config/shopify-ai-toolkit/opt-out file, OPT_OUT_INSTRUMENTATION=true or DO_NOT_TRACK=1

Review the source before granting an agent access to credentials or production systems. We document what the maintainers state; we do not audit code.

Limitations

  • LIQUID_VALIDATION_MODE=partial removes validate_theme and validates code blocks only
