What Redis MCP Server is

A natural-language interface for agentic apps to manage and search data in Redis. It supports the stdio transport and installs from PyPI via uvx. Tools cover core Redis data types, JSON, streams, pub/sub, vector search and documentation search.

Where Redis MCP Server runs and what it adds, from its documentation
  • String, hash, list, set and sorted-set tools
  • Streams tools including consumer groups
  • Pub/sub publish and subscription reading
  • JSON document tools
  • Query engine tools for vector indexes and vector search
  • Docs search and server information tools

When to use it

Good fit

  • You want an agent to cache, store sessions or queue data in Redis
  • You need vector index management and search from an agent
  • You want to restrict access with a Redis ACL read-only user

Not for

  • You need streamable-HTTP transport (README says only stdio is supported for now)

How to install Redis MCP Server

You need: uv (uvx) or Docker; Python 3.14+ per the README badge; A reachable Redis instance

  1. Install uv
  2. Add the server to your MCP client config using uvx --from redis-mcp-server@latest redis-mcp-server --url redis://localhost:6379/0
  3. Alternatively use REDIS_HOST, REDIS_PORT, REDIS_PWD, REDIS_SSL env variables, or the Docker image
  4. Optionally create a read-only Redis ACL user for the server

}

Permissions and security

What it can access

  • Reads and writes data in the connected Redis database, limited by the Redis user's ACL
  • Docs tool calls an HTTP API configured via MCP_DOCS_SEARCH_URL

Security notes from the maintainers

  • README shows creating a read-only ACL user (ACL SETUSER readonlyuser on >mypassword ~* +@read -@write)
  • Use rediss:// with ssl_cert_reqs=required and ssl_ca_certs to verify the server

Review the source before granting an agent access to credentials or production systems. We document what the maintainers state; we do not audit code.

Limitations

  • Only stdio transport is supported

Frequently asked questions

How do I install the Redis MCP Server?

Use uvx: uvx --from redis-mcp-server@latest redis-mcp-server --url redis://localhost:6379/0, or add it to your MCP client config. source

Can I make the Redis MCP Server read-only?

Yes, by connecting it with a Redis ACL user limited to +@read -@write, as the README shows. source

Which transport does the Redis MCP Server support?

stdio only; streamable-HTTP support is stated as future work. source

Does the Redis MCP Server support vector search?

Yes, through its query engine tools for vector indexes and vector search. source
