What TokenEater is

TokenEater monitors Claude and OpenAI Codex usage limits from the macOS menu bar. It shows live percentages with colour thresholds, a dashboard with history and pacing graphs, native WidgetKit widgets and a floating overlay of running Claude Code sessions. It reads the OAuth token Claude Code keeps in the macOS Keychain and calls Anthropic's read-only usage endpoint; for Codex it reads ~/.codex/auth.json.

Where TokenEater runs and what it adds, from its documentation
  • Menu bar percentages for the five-hour and weekly windows, colour-coded
  • Dashboard with sparklines, pacing graphs and 24h to 90d history from local session logs
  • Native WidgetKit widgets for Claude and Codex usage
  • Agent Watchers overlay that lists live Claude Code sessions and jumps to the terminal
  • Multiple Claude accounts, each with its own config folder
  • Per-event notifications and custom themes

When to use it

Good fit

  • You pay for Claude Pro, Max or Team and want to see the weekly window before it runs out
  • You run Claude Code or Codex CLI all day on a Mac

Not for

  • Claude's free plan, which exposes no usage data
  • Codex API-key accounts
  • Windows or Linux

How to install TokenEater

You need: macOS 14 or later; Claude Pro, Max or Team plan, or Codex CLI signed in with ChatGPT

  1. Download TokenEater.dmg from the GitHub releases page and drag it to Applications
  2. Or with Homebrew: brew tap AThevon/tokeneater, then brew install --cask tokeneater (brew trust AThevon/tokeneater on Homebrew 6+)
  3. Sign in to Claude Code once so the OAuth token is in the Keychain
  4. Launch TokenEater; the menu bar item appears

Permissions and security

What it can access

  • Reads the Claude Code OAuth token from the macOS Keychain via the security tool
  • Reads ~/.codex/auth.json for Codex
  • Calls read-only usage and profile endpoints; the README states it never writes or refreshes tokens

Security notes from the maintainers

  • Builds from source are not notarized, so Gatekeeper blocks the first launch

Review the source before granting an agent access to credentials or production systems. We document what the maintainers state; we do not audit code.

Limitations

  • Depends on undocumented usage endpoints that the vendors can change

Frequently asked questions

Does TokenEater work with the Claude free plan?

No. The README says Claude's free plan does not expose usage data; a Pro, Max or Team plan is required.

How does TokenEater read Claude usage?

It reads the OAuth token Claude Code stores in the macOS Keychain and calls Anthropic's read-only usage and profile endpoints; the README says it never writes to or refreshes credentials.

Does TokenEater support Codex?

Yes, for Codex CLI signed in with ChatGPT: it reads the token from ~/.codex/auth.json. Codex API-key accounts are not supported.
