What Postgres MCP Pro is
Open source MCP server for the whole development process. It offers health analysis, index tuning, query plans, schema intelligence and safe SQL execution. The reference postgres server is archived in modelcontextprotocol/servers-archived.
What it does
- Database health checks
- Index tuning
- EXPLAIN plans with hypothetical indexes
- Schema-aware SQL generation
- Restricted (read-only) vs unrestricted access mode
When to use it
Good fit
- Performance tuning with an agent
- Dev use in unrestricted mode, production in restricted mode
Not for
- Unreviewed writes to production: use restricted mode
- Python-less or Docker-less setups
How to install Postgres MCP Pro
You need: Docker or Python 3.12+; Postgres credentials
- Have DB credentials and Docker or Python 3.12+

Permissions and security
What it can access
- Runs SQL on the configured database; restricted mode limits to read-only transactions
Security notes from the maintainers
- DATABASE_URI contains credentials
Review the source before granting an agent access to credentials or production systems. We document what the maintainers state; we do not audit code.
Limitations
- Restricted mode constrains only execution time among resources
