Our take: Screendrop is a good free pick for Mac users who want a Loom-style screenshot and screen-recording tool with on-device OCR and captions and who can run macOS 26.4 or newer.
Main limitation: It runs only on macOS 26.4+ and is under active development with possible breaking changes.

Screendrop is an open-source macOS menu bar app for taking screenshots and screen recordings, positioned as a native Loom alternative. It includes annotation, redaction, backgrounds and a recording editor with zooms, cursor effects, captions and cuts. AI-related features run on-device: OCR to copy text from the screen, speech-recognition teleprompter, and narration transcription for captions and transcript-based editing. Optional sharing is self-hosted on the user's own Cloudflare account.
