Best ChatExtender alternatives in 2026 (free and paid)
ChatExtender adds local memory and cross-chat search on top of ChatGPT and Claude, which also defines its limits. It runs only on macOS 13 or later, with no Windows or mobile version listed. You still need your own ChatGPT or Claude accounts, so subscription costs remain. Messages still go to the chosen provider and its privacy terms apply, and it works with web chat interfaces only, not coding-agent products.
The alternatives are the assistants it extends. ChatGPT is OpenAI's general assistant for writing, research, analysis and coding help; it has a free plan and Plus is $20 per month. Claude is Anthropic's assistant for analysis, coding and multi-step work, with a free plan and Pro at $20 per month. Using either directly drops the extra app and works on any device, but you lose the local cross-chat search. Our data does not describe built-in memory features for either.
"Better suited" below is based on documented features and pricing from our verified profiles, not on a head-to-head test. Prices are USD as published by each vendor.

Almost every tool (uploads, images, voice, deep research, Codex) has plan-dependent usage caps that OpenAI states can change over time, and the API is billed separately from every ChatGPT subscription.
