What Claude costs, in plain terms
Claude is sold in three separate ways. Consumer plans (Free, Pro, Max 5x, Max 20x) are flat monthly subscriptions per user. Business plans (Team, Enterprise) are priced per seat. The API is billed per million tokens and is separate from every chat plan. Every chat plan has usage limits, and the vendor does not offer unlimited usage.
Free is $0 and covers chat on web, desktop, iOS and Android with Sonnet and Haiku models, but no Claude Code or Research. The lowest paid tier, Pro, is $20/month ($17/month on an annual subscription billed up front at $200). It adds Claude Code, Research, unlimited Projects and Opus models, with more usage than Free.
